PETER TSITSOPOULOS

Tsitsopoulos was born in Constantinople in 1948. His family moved to Athens in 1962, and in 1968 he dropped out of Medical School in order to concentrate in music.

He studied piano at the National Conservatory under K. Mavromichalis and D. Orpi, as well as Music Theory, Harmony and Counterpoint, Fugue, Orchestration, and Band Direction under Sotos Vasileiadis. He continued his studies in Composition at the Apollonion Conservatory under Vassilios Dellios and Christos Lambrianidis, and his piano studies under Max Hallecker and Linda Leoussi.

Tsitsopoulos has taught Music Theory and Piano since 1972 at the following institutions: National Conservatory, Orpheio, Apollonion Conservatory, while in 1982 he founded the Experimental Conservatory, of which he remains the Director, as well as instructor in the aforementioned disciplines.

Since 1978, Tsitsopoulos has served as Artistic Director of several musical institutions in Greece and has been a member of the H.C.A. since 1984.

He has written a book on Harmony – The World of Chords in Traditional and Modern Harmony (Andromidas, 1995).

Tsitsopoulos has composed many works in his own musical idiom, which although informed by aspects of Arnold Schoenberg’s 12-tone system, it results in a 12-tone structure without abandoning the feeling of tonality.
